Murdoc is essentially a walking trigger warning. He’s a man of poor morals and even poorer hygiene habits. He has purpose in life and he’d stop at nothing to achieve his goals, even if it means kidnapping people or, say, making a deal with the devil. It’s all means to justify the end he desires. As lovely a person as he seems already, he also has a tendency to bully others and project onto them to get his way.

Of course, all unsociable behaviour has its roots. Murdoc was abandoned as a baby, left on the doorstep of his Father’s home. Nobody knows exactly who his Mother is, but Murdoc seems indifferent about this. His Father was both emotionally and physically abusive; he used his children as a way to get booze money and was the beginning of Murdoc’s many, many problems. A memory he recalls from his youth involves a talent show for children, in which he was forced to sing while wearing a ridiculous costume. He makes a note of the other children, all mimicking the artists of the day who were all mimicking each other. Bitter about the humiliation and the unoriginality of the other performers, he vowed he would never take to the stage again under anyone else’s direction.
This is when he believes Gorillaz began, with his rejection of pop music and all that kind of rubbish.

Murdoc endured years of his Father’s ill behaviour before he was finally sent to school, which he had even less luck with. He attended Sodsworth Comprehensive School, where he spent more time in the hallways than he did in the class, one can only imagine why. He’s described as an appauling student who smelt of whiskey and distracted the other students will his quacking noises and malicious humour. Though, teacher admits that Murdoc had charisma and a knack for making his peers see things the ‘Murdoc Niccals’ way. Ultimately, he was a stupid imbecile.
By the time he was 13 he had developed a reputation within the school for a number of unfavourable things such as truancy, ugliness and unruly behaviour. He was also the target of bullying, which seems surprising considering the man he is today, though it explains a lot. One boy in particular made Murdoc’s misery his personal project, mostly because Murdoc was a creepy, little runt.

Though the bully now regrets his behaviour, knowing Murdoc’s success in life. Murdoc grew tired of the relentless bullying and unleashed a venomous tirade of wit upon him. This resulted in the first of several nose fractures and a slightly more manned up Murdoc.
It was then he discovered his hidden ability to zero in on other people’s insecurities and highlight them. Most of his years after that were spent becoming the poster boy for teen rebellion. It was in this time that he discovered a greater love for music, especially metal, and when he became a Satanist which should come as no surprise. His goals expanded out of Stoke on Trent and he began to think bigger. After graduation, he decided he would become a star musician, and as previously stated he would become unstoppable.

It’s this mix of bitterness, recklessness, loathing and unshakeable determination that brings together the current day Murdoc. He’s portrayed as a fairly humorous character, but he’s truly a dark and twisted person when it boils down to it. He’s possessive of his band and its members and he will push them to success alongside himself, even if it means kidnapping them and forcing them to record an album.

He’s a bit of an eccentric guy, the cape and cane is a strong indication of this. Despite the things his face has gone through, he still swaggers like jagger and rocks the tight jeans. He honestly doesn’t seem to care what people think, though on occasion he will lash out if he feels as though he’s being made fun of. His sexuality is a running joke within the band, but he will always deny his bisexual tendencies. He seems a bit of a funny guy, particularly in interviews where he’s likely to build a good back and forth with both the interviewers and the other band members. However, it’s not unlikely that his more carefree attitude in those cases is simply a face he puts on for the public.

Of everyone in the band, he is tied closest to 2D. They’ve been practically joint at the hip since he crashed his car through the window of the store he worked at. Thanks to the justice system, he was mandated to care for 2D during his catatonic state after the accident, which was a poor choice indeed. Murdoc’s carelessness with the injured boy resulted in another accident, but also a revelation for Murdoc. He was a pretty boy with a vacant expression and the voice of an angel, exactly the kind of thing Murdoc required for his band. The two have had a dysfunctional bromance since then. Murdoc is cruel, violent and manipulative of 2D and 2D takes most of it in his stride, seeming scared of Murdoc but also obligated to hang around. When he’s not being cruel, the two of them can get along swimmingly and complement each other in a strange fashion. He kidnapped the drummer Russel and acquired Kong Studios, where he began to set up the band before royally stuffing it up by sleeping with the guitarist. That is until Noodle was delivered to them in a FED-EX crate.

He seems wary of Russell, who was the cause of one of the eight fractures to his nose, but at least someone can keep him in line. While he’s not exactly a Fatherly or Brotherly figure, he values Noodle as a member of his band and has expressed concern for her safety and even protected her and made deals with her on a few occasions. That much is rare from a guy like Murdoc.

Born in the stinking burrow of Stoke-on-Trent, Murdoc lives in the home of his Father, Sebastian Jacob Niccals. He is a pureblood, or at least, it’s assumed that he is. Nobody is quite sure of whom his Mother is, but his Father is unlikely to shag a muggle (or at least that’s what he says). The Niccals family is not a prestigious wizarding family, not anymore. They were once quite well known in the magical world, but their reputation has sunk to extremely low levels since then. They are a long line of dark wizards, but also dark wizards with bad hygiene with alcoholic and sex crazed tendencies. They’re just not good people, and so it’s no surprise Murdoc grew up the way he did.

His Father was both emotionally and physically abusive to Murdoc and his older Brother, Hannibal. He is about seven years older than Murdoc and currently a punk who would prefer to be a muggle than a wizard, much to his Father’s annoyance. The darker days of Murdoc’s childhood would occasionally be lightened by his Brother, who would bring home the strangest Muggle contraptions. It was the day he showed Murdoc muggle music that changed Murdoc forever. He found the music inspiring in both the loud nature of it and the harsh but truthful lyrics. It was he and his brother’s attachment to the muggle world that brought a lot of harsh punishments from their Father onto them. Listening to music in secret became a form of bonding for them, though Hannibal was also fond of beating his younger brother up.

When Murdoc received his acceptance letter, it was his Brother who took him to Diagon Alley where he acquired his wand. A 12.5 inch walnut wand with a dragon heart string core, and it fitted him perfectly. His Brother, now graduated, put him on the train and wandered off and Murdoc began his first year. He was subject to much bullying at first, because he was a strange kid from a bad family and let’s face it, he smelt kind of weird. He took it in his stride for the year until he finally imploded upon the subject of his torment, not with magic but with words. After this outburst he earned himself a reputation and he went home at the end of the year with a broken nose and a proud smile. That was when he discovered his Brother had left home. The records and the player waited for him in his empty room.

It was the end of his second year when things really turned bad for Murdoc. His Father knew he was inclined toward muggle music, but it was after a long night of drinking that he came home to discover the young boy sitting alone listening to the music. They fought, but his Father had an obvious advantage and Murdoc wound up with a broken nose and a cursed eye. As such, his nose is very crooked and one of his eyes is a vibrant shade of red. He was kicked out indefinitely but fortunately for him, it was a day before the train would pull into the station. He slept there over night and then sat there smirking smugly at the people arriving later, as if he had simply arrived bright and early. He knew what he needed then was a patsy. Someone he could manipulate and keep around while he worked on his long term goals. After a quick poke around the train he spotted a strange looking boy with big blank eyes. After engaging in a brief conversation he knew this was the kid he’d be bothering.

Upon his arrival he was informed that he would be joining the quidditch team as a beater, as a way to release some of his obviously pent up anger issues. See, the problem with this plan is that Murdoc suffers from Anablephobia, which is a fear of looking up. In their first practise he was clinging to his broomstick pathetically and he knew he needed to distract the attention away from himself. So, when a bludger was hurled in his direction he quickly gave it a smack into the direction of the young, wide eyed boy he knew in the stands. The consequence of this was that the boy was now in Murdoc’s care. Murdoc had to take care of him, talk to him and help him study and he still had to play quidditch. While it was an unoriginal idea, he figured if he smacked a bludger at the boy again he would not be trusted on the field or with the boy ever again, and he was right for the most part. He was banned from playing quidditch and the boy no longer required his full attention, and yet, he seemed to linger around him anyway. From that point on, he became less of a bully and more of a friend (a friend who is still a bully).

As a student, Murdoc finds it difficult to apply himself to classes. This isn’t to say he’s stupid, he’s actually quite clever. School is just not essential to his goal of introducing muggle music to the wizard world and becoming famous. He’s also good at classes for the wrong reasons. For example, he’s good at making potions for slipping into food. He’s good at transfiguration when it comes to turning himself green to freak people out. He’s good at herbology for identifying plants you can smoke. Schoolwork is just not a priority and it is an unfortunate waste. He probably won’t pass his final year and he doesn’t want to.

Gryffindor:
He’s not really honourable or courageous but he’s determined to a flaw and likes to be in charge. He’s definitely daring and he takes a lot of risks and bets on himself.

Hufflepuff:
He’s put a lot of hard work into his band and nobody could ever call him lazy in regards to the lengths he goes to accomplish his goals. He could also be described as loyal to the band considering how possessive he is of them.

Ravenclaw:
He never did particularly well in school, but he’s quite sharp witted and can have moments of eloquence. He seems eager to learn new words and new ideas if they will benefit him and he often corrects 2D when he’s having trouble gathering his thoughts.

Slytherin:
This is a house tailored to fit Murdoc. He’s a cunning character and uses the most underhanded methods to achieve victory. He’s most certainly ambitious, he dreams big and he aims high. He’s unafraid of the darker side of things and he’s quite a brilliant leader, since he’s managed to make everyone stick around for so long. Obviously, he has a disregard for rules and guidelines, particularly when they meddle with his goals.
